Out and About in Charlotte

We went Uptown to try The King's Kitchen.

Awesome fried chicken!

If you don't know about it, check it out here.

It's a wonderful way to have a great night while helping those in need.

Out and About in Winston-Salem

On Saturday, my friend Sarah and I drove over to Winston-Salem to see a couple of really cool things...

First, we were happy to see the Modern Masters exhibit which is currently on display at the Reynolda House.

Let me just tell you - it was extremely cool and I was in heaven.

First, they had three works by Franz Kline, my new art crush.  AND they had a Helen Frankenthaler.  Gorgeous.  AND they had several works by Robert Motherwell - who was once married to Helen Frankenthaler.  AND they had a piece by Esteban Vicente - it was very Rothko-esque and it was so gorgeous I could have just died...

Then we toured the Reyolda House which was the home of RJ Reynolds and his family.  It was also gorgeous.  A quintessential Southern house.  What you can learn from it is that if you lived in the deep South way back when, it was ALL ABOUT the screened porch and cross ventilation.  Although the house is gorgeous it is also very livable.

It's funny that I walked or ran across the Reynolda House grounds almost every single day when I was in law school - Wake Forest's campus adjoins (and was once a part of) the estate grounds - and this was only the second time I have actually been IN the house.

Crazy.

If you are in North Carolina this exhibit is definitely worth the trip.  It runs through December 31.

Out and About Around Charlotte

My darling friend and I drove up to Blowing Rock last weekend to have a look at the leaves...

And eat Barbeque....

Both were divine.

Out and About in West Virginia

Last week, my mom and I headed over to visit Lewisburg, West Virginia - the coolest small town in America.

Look - they even have flags to prove it -

Now, y'all may not know this but West Virginians don't really DO the things in West Virginia that regular people (read non- West Virginians or tourists) do.

We don't ski.  We don't white water raft.  We don't stay at The Greenbrier....  you get the gist....

But casting caution to the wind, Mom and I decided to go to Lewisburg and act like tourists.

It was very beautiful.

We had lunch at Food and Friends.  Good food.  Great service.  Really crowded.  If you go for dinner, make a reservation.

Really cute buildings with great architecture:

Antiques, art galleries -

What looked to be a decent place to get a facial -

And you know, the requisite kitchen/cheese/coffee shop - Bella the Corner Gourmet.

If you are headed to West Virginia you may wanna stop on by.

Out and About in Charlotte

I love Cafe Monte.

Any place where I can get French food and a Paris vibe is on my list.   The fact that its in my neighborhood is gravy.  The fact that they will give you such a good weekend brunch just knocks them out of the park!

Out and About in Charlotte

Did you know that Carson McCullers wrote part of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter while living in Charlotte?

She did.  She wrote while living in what is known as The Mayer House, over on East Boulevard.  It is now home to an Indian Restaurant called Copper.....

Out and About in Charleston

Did I mention that, while in Charleston, I ate at my favorite place in the world?

Well I did.

And Slightly North of Broad did not disappoint me!!!

Out and About

I went to Lincolnton to Court last Thursday - one of my favorite places to go - and was able to swing by the Best Used Book Store In the Universe - North State Books.

Happy, Happy Bee Charmer.
