The Weekly Bean

For those of you who find yourselves Corgi-less, there is one thing about them that you may not know.

They are STARVING.

It's true.

There is never enough food and they spend every waking minute of their time searching for someone to feed them.  The only reason they follow me around so faithfully is that they are afraid there will be some food - somewhere - and they don't want to miss the opportunity to beg for some of it.

Despite this, the ugly rumor that they will eat until they explode is not true.  They have been bred to stop one bite short of explosion.

Everything they do during the day when they are not eating is just an effort to keep their minds off the fact that they are starving.

The other night I stood at the bottom of the stairs at 11:30 pleading for them to come down and go potty before bedtime.

Nothin'.  Not a peep.

Going up and rousting them would have been more trouble, since they would have taken their sweet time to wander down the steps and we'd have been 15 more minutes of me cajoling them and them pretending to be too tired to pee.

So - I walked into the kitchen, opened the pantry door and rattled the plastic bag containing organic peanut butter dog treats.  Once.  Within 15 seconds they were both running down the steps like their butts were on fire.  Apparently, there is sleeping and then there's, you know, sleeping....

Recently, they have discovered that they can con our next door neighbor, Miss Alice, into giving them treats.

They now spend quite a bit of time hanging out by the fence.  Waiting.

The other night, Finn was out there for a good hour and a half after dinner.  He had to lay down, he was so weak with starvation.

(This is his pitiful "please feed me" face).

  1. loved the pictures and the story. I can so relate. Corgis are sooooo food obsessed! mine can distinguish between the various rustling of bags with what treat is being offered and if it is his favorite, he is there in a flash :)

  2. Yes. Finn and Lola also know the difference between the various bags/wrappers when they rustle. I think I should have named them Pig One and Pig Two.

  3. That is so funny! Gingerbean has to run in from outside and check out the kitchen floor to see if I dropped something while she was outside!!
